Stephen Yantachka was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, specifically in the area of Orava, Slovakia. He arrived in the US with his family in the early 1900's and settled in Luzerne, PA. He worked from an early age in the Harry E. mine. Stephen married Anna Porada in St. John Nepomocene Church in Luzerne, PA , and the couple were lifelong members of the parish. They had four children. Stephen continued working in the mines for many years and lived in Luzerne for the rest of his life. In the late 1950's, he suffered a serious injury to his leg and hip when there was a rock fall in the Harry E Mine. The injury ended his mining career.
