Place & Manner of Miner’s Death:   Andrew Malatak, age 32, was entombed in No.1 tunnel of the No. 3 chute of what is known as the vertical vein. The Nesquehoning coal mine collapse occurred at 9 AM, Friday, March 1, 1918. Andrew's voice could be heard calling out, saying he was caught and was being badly squeezed. Just then, another collapse occurred and nothing more was heard. When the men were discovered on Sunday, March 3, 1918, Andrew was in a crouched position. His left leg and arm were broken. His right arm was thrown over the neck of George Gerick. After their bodies were recovered, the men were brought to the mine wash house at the mouth of the tunnel, under the direction of Undertaker Joseph Gallagher, assisted by Oliver Scott, Milford McElmoyle, William McElwain, Philip Boner, Maurice Granger and others.
