Miner Information:
John was the son of Thomas F. Cassidy, and Bridget C. (Murphy) Cassidy, both immigrants of Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, in Scotland. John never married but was in a relationship for over twenty years with Lucy Potter. John raised his grand nephew and took care of him until the day John died, he also took care of his widowed sister Mary Simpson. He became owner of his parents’ home in 1909, the same homestead all the Cassidy's settled in after leaving Scotland. The home was located at 207 Howard Street, Larksville, PA. It was said the reason John never married was to make sure one of his relatives inherited his home upon his death. John was employed in the coal mines for about 66 years, first as a Breaker Boy, a Stone Runner in 1900, and also as a Coal Miner. While working for, D. L. & W. in the Woodward Colliery for the Glen Alden Coal Co. in Kingston, his occupation was as an Electric Hoist-man, and an Engineer. It is believed that he worked at Lance Colliery at some point, as he father also worked and died in this mine. John dropped out of School in 1886, at the age of nine, completing fourth grade, more than likely he worked as a Breaker Boy. While employed by D & H Coal Company, Number 3, Plymouth, he was in a Coal Mining accident. On October 23rd 1913, while tamping a hole preparatory to firing a blast, a piece of top coal fell and struck his right arm, also receiving a bad scalp wound. He retired in 1952 at the age of 76. John was taught and played the violin and the piano, his father and three brothers played their instruments and sang together at their childhood home. He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church, Plymouth, with its Holy Name Society, and he was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. John is buried in the Parish Cemetery, also known as All Saints, located on Mountain Road, Larksville. He is buried next to his sister Mary Simpson in an unmarked grave.
