My grandfather worked in the Greenwood Colliery mines, behind the place where a K-mart is presently standing. The entire area recently went through a reclamation, which closed the several formerly-open drifts back there. Anyway, he was a mule boy. One day, a mule named Dick broke his leg in the mine. My grandfather ran around screaming "They're going to shoot Dick! They're going to shoot Dick!" to anyone who would listen. He lobbied so hard for that mule's life that he acquired the nickname "Dick". I never knew his real name was Adolph until he was almost 80 years old. Everyone called him Dick.
