William (Bill) began working at the tender age of 14 to help support his family. The majorit of his employment years were spent in the stripping and coal mines. He worked at several different collieries in the Wyoming Valley area. We recall him speaking about “setting the dynamite” and about operating a “jack hammer”. We remember all to well his tired face, blackened with coal dust and only his eyes visible. “Daddy Bill” was involved in a mining accident early in his career as a miner which sent him to the hospital. Other were more seriously injured. He eventually developed Black Lung and was unable to recover from the flu- succumbing in 1972 at the age of 67.
