Miner Information:
After the death of his mother, William and his siblings were abandoned by their father; he and a brother were later adopted by a storekeeper in Gouldsboro, PA. As a young man he traveled to sites of several National Parks as a construction laborer, later returning to Pennsylvania to become a miner. He resided in Kingston and, after several moves that followed mine openings, he married, purchased a home in Avoca, and started a family. Mr. Hardey was a respected member in the community and his church, the Primitive Methodist Church in Avoca. He worked as a miner during the turbulent times of long strikes, reverting to jobs as a cobbler and a finish painter to provide for his expanding family. William was fastidious about his hygiene and never came home until scrubbed clean of coal dirt. William died instantly in an accident in the No.2 shaft of the No. 9 colliery of the Pittston Company, at Hughestown. As he was engaged in prying down a piece of top rock, he slipped and fell against a mine car, breaking his neck. He was 43 years old at the time of the accident. No one mourned his death more than his two-year-old son Leonard, who watched in vain every afternoon for him to come home as usual, with a little of his lunch left over for his little boy.
