Three of his four sons-in-law were born in Wales; all four worked for a time in the anthracite mines, and died of factors related to respiratory complications acquired in their employment in that industry. He was employed by the Lehigh and Wilkes-Barre Coal Company for 43 years. He was a chorister of the Second Welsh Presbyterian Church in Wilkes-Barre for many years.
