Richard H. Honeychurch was born to Eva (Allen) Honeychurch and Richard Honeychurch, Jr., in Plymouth, PA, on August 21st, 1928. Richard grew up and graduated from Hanover High School, then enlisted in the Army, being stationed in Guam post WWII. Once he returned from years of service, he began working in the Buttonwood No.22 Coal mine, where his father and grandfather had worked for several years. He followed a long family history of working in the mines, spanning back centuries of generations. In 1952 he re-enlisted in the Army during the Korean War, where he served for several years, eventually returning to the region, where he resumed working in the coal mines. After a fatal accident of a family member, where the shaft elevator lost its cable and pinned the family member’s head between the mine shaft and the lift, he sought out other employment after 9 years in the mines. Eventually he worked at the Army Depot, and later retired as a mail carrier with 39 years of service.
