Miner’s Country: United States Arrived in USA: Miner Information: Michael was a Breaker Boy at age 9, in 1875, and worked for the Lehigh and Wilkes-Barre Coal Company; he later became a slate picker, and still later a mule driver, hauling cars of broken coal from the galleries to the sorting rooms. Michael was age nineteen, when it suddenly occurred to him one day that he had had enough of coal mining. Seemed to him that his health would improve if he were to work a while in the open air. He obtained employment as a blacksmith at the wagon shop of Louis La Grand and Sons, in Wilkes-Barre, where he remained about five years. Next he was employed as an apprentice of Peter Frey Wagon Shop for four years. Michael's attention was attracted by a published notice of several vacancies on the police force of Wilkes-Barre. The life of a policeman, with its promise of excitement and promotions, seemed attractive to the young man. He applied and was appointed first as a patrolman, his faithful and distinguished service winning him promotion and a transfer to the detective division. He solved several notable cases, lending to the capture of notorious criminals. This also earned Michael another distinction, and he was appointed captain of detectives. On Feb. 15, 1922, he was appointed chief of police. He was a member of the National Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Ancient Order of the Hibernians. He was a staunch Democrat and a communicant of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Wilkes-Barre.
