Born into a mining family, both William and his father, George, were miners in an iron mine in North Yorkshire, England. After his older brother, George,emigrated to Australia, William responded to an appeal from mine owners in Pennsylvania to experienced miners in England, Wales, and Ireland to come to the anthracite coal fields. These miners were offered transportation for themselves and their families and were guaranteed housing and employment if they signed a labor contract. William left his home in England and brought his wife and family, including a newborn, Arthur, who was born at sea and named after the ship which carried the family to America. They settled initially in the Providence section of Scranton and later in Moosic, Pennsylvania, where William purchased a home. He worked his entire life as a miner, finally retiring after more than thirty-five years in the mines. He died at home at the age of 80.
