Worked in the Nottingham Mine of Glen Alden Coal Company. Dan Lewis was killed in an explosion January 15, 1947 at the Nottingham Colliery, along with 14 others. His friend and mine foreman, John R Goulstone, had assigned him to a new crew that morning, but Dan asked if he could stay with the crew he was already working with in another section of the mine. After the explosion John carried the body of his friend out of the mine without recognizing him. Dan left a widow and two daughters. He had worked one month in the mines and received one paycheck.
