Miner Information:
William worked at Loree #3 in Larksville, PA. I don't know when he worked, but he was unemployed during the Great Depression. William is the son of Thomas Cassidy, who was born in Lanark, Glasgow, Scotland (of Irish descent). His mother, Bridget Cecelia Murphy (also of Irish descent), was born in Campsie, Stirlingshire, Scotland. William's parents emigrated to PA in July, 1875, into N.Y. on the U.S.S. Utopia, with young sons Tom and Felix, settling in Larksville, PA. William, the last born child of ten children, worked in the mines, but became unemployed during the Great Depression. He was married to Gertrude Brown. When William and Gert later separated, she took her two daughters, moving to Wilkes-Barre, while he took two sons and their daughter Mary and continued to live in the family home on Howard Street in Larksville, the home his parents had bought. William played the piano, and my mother told me that when she was a little girl he used to sit her on his lap and play the piano for her, calling her my little Mary Agnes. During the flood of 1935 William took his three children, Thomas, Mary Agnes and living son, to see the flood, along with a neighbor and their German Shepherd, Jack. Tom fell into the Susquehanna River while skipping rocks. William, an excellent swimmer, jumped in to save his son, but the current was too strong, and as a result they both drowned. Mom, her brother, neighbor, and his dog walked home alone that day. Mom was eight years old. They never found Tom's body, but three days later they found William at Wapwallopen, PA. William was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church, Plymouth, PA, and was buried in the parish cemetery in Larksville, with no grave marker.
