He was drafted in the U.S. Army and served as a medic in WWII with the 6th Armored Division, 86 Reconnaisance unit, with General Patton's 6th Army (where he received the Silver Star for saving 24 lives at a battle near Brest, Brittany). Following the war, he worked as a shaker runner at the Harry E breaker in Swoyersville. He left the anthracite industry when the breaker closed in the 1960s."
