My grandfather went to the mines after first grade.  He did not know how to read or write.  He was injured in the mines and almost died. I do not know how old he was, just that my mom was a small child then.  He was riding on the outside of a coal car when another car smashed into his back.  Mom told me that some men drove him home tossed him on the porch and drove away.  My family took him to the local hospital; I assume Pittston Hospital, where it was found that his left kidney was destroyed.  They could do nothing for this, so he was sent to Philly.  There they removed the kidney.  When he recovered, he could no longer work in the mines.  He then worked at a bar in Dupont, cleaning up.  Went on to work in the Camden ship yards during the war.  His final job was working as a night watchman in the horse rendering factory in the woods some place near Dupont.
