In the 1950’s and prior, my father worked as a miner.  He was born in 1908, and I believe by the age of 12 he was working in the mines. I  remember having to shop in the company store, which was in Lansford.  The name of the store, I think, was Bright’s. Just like in the song, we had to do our shopping at the company store.  Those were very poor times; my father left for work when it was dark and came home in the dark.  He left home with a pale white face and came home pitch black.  It’s sad when I think about how hard my father must have had it, but he was not unhappy. It was a way of life for him, and he accepted it. Black lung was the cause of his death.
