Miner Information:
My father, Walter E. Baran, worked in the Mines in Ashley, PA at The Huber Colliery for 48 years before he retired. He was a Pipeman for the Co. and his job was to lay the pipes that supplied the water for the Mining Operation in the mines. He was a dedicated employee of The Blue Coal Company and was well known throughout the company as an excellent worker as he always reported for work with very few absent days. My Dad, Pop, as we called him, was very proud to be a miner and you never heard him complain. Pop had seen many of his co-workers perish in the mines but would not talk about it to0 much. He was fortunate on many occasions to survive near death situations with accidents in the mines. At times when some of the miners would get together to relax a little, stories could be heard among them but not too much was said outside of their circle of co-workers. He worked with pride doing his job and was proud to be able to provide a living for his family. Family was the most important part of Pops life and he was always there if anyone in the family needed help with anything. He was always there, for me and my late brother,to attend our sport activities starting with The Little League of Ashley-Newtown from the start in 1949 when we were young and when we played sports in High School. He couldn’t be at the start of our games because he was working, but after he showered in the Shifting Shanty at The Huber, you would see him sitting in his car in the outfield of all of our games where ever we played. We were very proud of Pop and how he raised our family and we would be honored to have his name engraved on the Memorial to be erected in Wilkes-Barre in the near future. I believe the work that these men performed, under such dangerous conditions, should be recognized for giving this area the National importance of their contribution in the development of this country, through the use of Anthracite Coal as one of the main sources of fuel for Industry. My family and I thank you for any consideration you may have in adding my Father, Walter E. Baran to the Miners Monument.
