He wanted to enlist in 1941, but since he was working in the deep mines, which was considered a vital industry, he was refused. He worked in the mines until approximately 1944, when he was buried in a cave-in, which resulted in the crushing of his ankle so badly that doctors wanted to amputate it. He refused and after over 9 months in a cast, the mines declared him unfit to work. He received no compensation. He suffered his whole life with pain in his ankle and later in life, with breathing problems and related angina. He was a hard-working man who worked at various jobs from chauffeur to bartender. He died at age 52 from a coronary occlusion. He died at work. People remember him as a fun-loving man who loved playing cards and fishing. I remember him as a loving father. Patty was also a well-known trumpet and French horn player in several local bands, including Wendel's Band, The Liberty Marching Band, and The Freeland Bellhops. John was the son of George Francis and Beatrice Jones Goulstone. When he was seven years old, his father was killed in an Avondale Mine accident. As a fatherless boy, he was enrolled at the Girard School for Boys near Philadelphia. Upon his return to Plymouth at the age of 16, he sought work in the mines. His Uncle Harry, a mine supervisor, discouraged him from mining and arranged a job on the surface with a surveying crew. However, John needed more income to support his family, so he soon got a job as a miner in the Nottingham Colliery. Years later when he became a Fire Boss, he took his son Jack with him to inspect before the workers arrived. They turned off their lights and Jack found out how black black can be. John later became a Mine Foreman, whose duties included assigning men to work areas. One day he assigned his friend Dan Lewis to an area, and Dan requested permission to stay with his original crew. Later that day an explosion occurred, killing fifteen men, including Dan, and John carried his friend's body out of the mine. John worked at Nottingham for twenty-five years until the mine closed in 1960. He died in 1974 at the age of 61.
