He worked his way up to a Motor Man (one of the better paying jobs). He worked for The Henry Mines in Plains, PA. He was the sole survivor of a mine explosion in 1945. He spent one year in a burn hospital. His last day in the mines was the day of the Knox Mine disaster in 1959. Deep coal mining ended in the Wyoming Valley that day. Thomas had a strong heart, but died of black lung at the age of 69. He was a man of few words, but was always proud of his "golden credit rating." He loved his family and was a very good father and husband. He also worked in construction on the South Street Bridge in Wilkes-Barre. He left a widow and four children at his death on St Patrick's Day, 1942. According to the 1910 Federal Census, James was a slate picker in the mines at age 15. His next youngest brother, Joseph age 10, was not yet working in the mines. James lost his mother in 1912 and in 1917 lost his father to influenza, while James was serving his country in Europe. James entered service in the 1st Division, 3rd Machine Gun Battalion on 9/15/1918 and was involved in the Meuse-Argonne offensive. Following the war, James and his older brother John took on new roles as family patriarchs and continued to guide their remaining siblings (9 total). James continued to work in the mines for both the Conlon Coal Company and the Lehigh Valley Coal Company as an engineer. He was active in his church, Sacred Heart of Plains, and was a lifelong member of the United Mine Workers of America. His only injury due to work was an accident that caused him to lose the joint in his left thumb. His last day of work was not too long after the accident at the Knox Mine. His wife, Mary D'Amato died less than 6 months later, they say of a broken heart. Her children have said that she would sit at the window day after day waiting for Rocco to come home. Rocco was just 52 years old and Maria was only 47. Theya re interned at the Our Lady of Grace Cemetery in Hazleton.
