Born into an immigrant family, John started work as a breaker boy at the age of eight. He took the confirmation name "Walter" after the Rev Walter Gorman, a priest sympathetic to the miners' cause. He was an early member of Johnny Mitchell's United Mine Workers. He also worked in construction on the South Street Bridge in Wilkes-Barre. He left a widow and four children at his death on St Patrick's Day, 1942.

Place & Manner of Miner’s Death:   John died in the Franklin Colliery, Wilkes-Barre PA, March 17, 1942. He fell down an 80-foot pit, where no lighting had been provided along the pathways. Lights were hastily installed the day after the accident; the mine owners sent a floral tribute to the funeral. He would have eventually died of black lung had the accident not happened.
