He was raised by his father, a coal miner, in Glen Lyon, PA. His father would not let him work as a breaker boy so he could go to school. Joseph graduated the 6th grade and started working in the mines for the DL&W Coal Co. at the age of 14. He later enlisted for WWII, where he acquired skills in explosives. After the war he went to work for the Glen Alden Coal Co., where he was only required to work a few hours every morning. He would do whatever blasting was needed and take off to the local beer gardens for the remainder of the day. Later in his career after marriage, his wife (whom he called by her middle name, Stella) would be mad at him every night when he would arrive home drunk. He would sleep it off and go to work the next morning. He was one of many miners passing away from illness associated with Anthrasilicosis. He is buried in the town where he lived and contributed to the industrial growth and prosperity of the USA.
