They had two children, Mary and Michael. On January 18, 1919, Apolonia was shot and killed by a family friend cleaning a gun in an unfortunate accident that also injured Michael. He recovered and later married Veronica Svarcz. They had a daughter, Sophie, before Michael returned to the US to work. Eventually, he saved enough money to bring his wife and 3 children to the US in 1926. Michael worked in the Huber Colliery in Wilkes-Barre. His family grew with the birth of Elmer, William, Veronica, and Joseph, for a total of 7 children. Place & Manner of Miner’s Death:   Died of a heart attack on his way home from working at the mine. His father was a coal miner. In 1908, his mother returned to Slovakia with Jan and his younger brother, Michael. Jan stayed in Slovakia and later fought in WWI for the Austro-Hungarian army. He was captured by the Russians and tortured, but his ability to speak Russian probably saved his life. A few years later he married Sophia Chelboveca and had a daughter, Susan. He then returned to the US and worked with his brother Michael in the steel mills in Sharon, PA. They eventually moved to Luzerne, PA to work in the anthracite coal mines. After 10 years in the US, Jan returned to Slovakia to work the land. He and Sophia then had 3 more children--Maria, Anna, and Jan. He remained in Slovakia for the rest of his life, dying at age 62 after suffering a head injury from a fall.
