Started out as a slate boy at the age of 11 years old. Then was put in the mine at the age of 13 years old and retired at the age of 52 years old. The last mine that he worked at was Coal Dale #8. He had 2 mules and a rat that saved him from a cave-in. He would give the rat part of his lunch everyday, and the one day the rat kept taking his lunch can and running away with it. The third time my Pap ran after the rat to get it, at the place where he was sitting eating his lunch there was a cave-in. So he was very lucky that the rat took his lunch can, or he would have been in the cave-in. That's why they fed the rats like pets, because they would warn them if there was any danger in sight!!
