The second son of Slovak immigrants John and Susan Janco Zluky, Michael and his older brother Jan returned with their mother in 1908 to her hometown of Strba, Slovakia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1923, at age 15, he returned to the US to find work because he didn't believe he had a good future in Slovakia as a middle child. In the US, he worked in Torrington and Waterbury, CT and lived for a time in the Bronx. When his older brother, Jan, arrived in the US, they worked for a time in the steel mills of western PA. Eventually, they learned of work in the anthracite coal mines in the eastern part of the state and settled in Luzerne, PA. Michael worked for several coal mines in Pringle, Harry E in Swoyersville, and Kehoe-Berge in Exeter for a total of 25 years as a miner.
