Michael was born in Hrabkov, Slovakia, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time. He came to the US in the late 1890's and lived in Wilkes-Barre. He worked for a time, then returned to his hometown in Slovakia, where he married Apolonia Blasko. They had two children, Mary and Michael. On January 18, 1919, Apolonia was shot and killed by a family friend cleaning a gun in an unfortunate accident that also injured Michael. He recovered and later married Veronica Svarcz. They had a daughter, Sophie, before Michael returned to the US to work. Eventually, he saved enough money to bring his wife and 3 children to the US in 1926. Michael worked in the Huber Colliery in Wilkes-Barre. His family grew with the birth of Elmer, William, Veronica, and Joseph, for a total of 7 children.
