At some point during the years after his birth in Whitsett, PA, Joseph and his family moved back to Eastern Slovakia. He returned to the US in September, 1927 and moved to the Scranton area. He married Helen Malenda in the early 1930's in Jessup, PA, and their family grew to include two daughters, Helen and MaryAnn. Eventually the family moved to Luzerne, PA, and Joseph began to work in the Harry E mine. He worked as a laborer for several years before transferring to the red ash area that had a lot of dust. He worked there until he died of black lung disease in 1957.
