Place & Manner of Miner’s Death:   Passed away in Mercy Hospital on Tuesday, August 30, 1962 at 7:55 a.m. as a result of Miner's Asthma (anthrasilicosis), also commonly called "Black Lung". Dad also had an enlarged heart from all of the extra effort to breathe, and we had to get an extra-wide coffin for him for burial. He originally started in the mines when he was 12 years old, since his father died at that time and his mother was an invalid. His brother, John, went in the Army, but Dad got a special dispensation from service since someone had to work to keep his mother and him. No benefits in those early years.
