In 1868 he moved to Plains, PA, where he also worked as a miner. He then married Bridget Ruddy, another immigrant from Ireland. He then left the mines and was able to build a grocery store/general store in Miners Mills. This was written about him: "He was a gentleman, outstanding businessman with sound common sense, considered a good philosopher and a fancier of horses." He eventually owned other buildings and stores in the Miners Mills area and was active in local politics. He and his wife had nine children, who became businessmen, physicians or teachers.
