Freeland, Eckley Mine. Patty was born in Freeland and was the oldest of 13 children. After attending school to the 8th grade, he worked at the Drifton Shops and attended MMI, where he learned to read blueprints and learned the trade of welding. He then worked as a welder in the mines for $.35 an hour. He commented that the supervisor would place a cage of pigeons on a miner's helmet to check for lethal gas. After ten years in the mines, he was diagnosed with Black Lung and began employment as a metal fabricator at Dorr-Oliver, retiring 44 years later as a crane operator. Patty was also a well-known trumpet and French horn player in several local bands, including Wendel's Band, The Liberty Marching Band, and The Freeland Bellhops.
