Thomas was 4 years old when his father was killed in a mine explosion, leaving his mother a widow with three children. Thomas left school after the fifth grade to assist the family. He began work as a breaker boy at age 12 and became a miner until the early 1930's. He then worked as an independent miner and later rented a breaker and hauled coal until the late 30's, when the market conditions for coal forced a shut-down. Thomas finished out his life with a bakery and lived until his 80th birthday, suffering with a bad back and black lung until his death.
